World's Largest Solar Plant
The world's largest solar power plant is set to be built in southern Portugal.
The 60-hectare, 11-megawatt plant located in Serpa, south of Lisbon, opens in January 2007 and will produce enough energy for 8,000 homes.
Serpa is located in the region of Alentejo, one of Europe's sunniest places.
The scheme is a joint project of U.S. energy companies GE Energy and PowerLight Corporation, and Portugal's renewable energy company Catavento.
Portugal plans to open more solar power plants in the future in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.
A plan to build a much larger solar power plant in nearby Moura has been under consideration for some years but has yet to be finalized.
