Portugal Votes For Abortion
Hospital |
Portugal's citizens voted 59.3% in favor of a change in the nation's law to allow abortions on Sunday but there was only a 40% turnout of eligible voters.
Portugal's Prime Minister Jose Socrates has vowed to press ahead with the proposed legislation, in which abortions will become legal in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.
At present, abortions are only legal in cases of rape, a health threat to the expectant mother or foetal abnormality.
Cardinal Jose da Cruz Policarpo, the Patriarch of Lisbon and the leader of the opposition Partido Popular Jose Ribeiro e Castro spoke out against Socrates' plans.
