Ossuaries in Portugal - Bone Chapels
Capelas dos Ossos or "chapels of Bones" were found all over medieval Europe.
This image (below) is from the famous Igreja de São Francisco in Evora.
The Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) in Evora is a small chapel covered with the bones of around 5,000 people to serve as a reminder of the brevity of life and the certainty of death.
There is another, similar chapel in Faro, the Igeja do Carmo, for example.
There are other ossuaries throughout Europe including the Skull Chapel in Czermna in Poland, the Sedlec Ossuary in the Czech Republic, the Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini in Rome and the San Bernardino alle Ossa in Milan.
