The ground was built in 1929 and now holds a capacity of 7,280 spectators. The football club, nicknamed the Sea Wolves (Lobos do Mar), founded in 1915, has played over 20 seasons in the top league of Portuguese football, the Primeira Liga, but now has fallen on harder times. The club is presently in Liga 3. It has been rather overshadowed by Rio Ave in the town of Vila do Conde to the south.
