The Hospital de Santo António in Porto, northern Portugal is one of the leading hospitals in the country.

The hospital was designed in the Palladian style by English architect John Carr

History

The hospital was designed in the Palladian style by English architect John Carr (1723-1807) and built between 1770 and 1824. (It was completed long after Carr's death).

Carr's works in England that can still be seen include Buxton Crescent in Buxton, Derbyshire and Fairfax House in York, Yorkshire.

The building was commissioned by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto, a charitable organization with a very long history of good works in Portugal.

The institution is both a working and teaching hospital connected with the University of Porto. It is classified as a National Monument.

Inside the building is a small but interesting museum set in two historic rooms - the Museu do Centro Hospitalar do Porto which is dedicated to the history and development of medicine and pharmacology in Portugal. (Small entrance fee required).
