Estádio do Restelo, Belem, Lisbon

Estádio do Restelo Lisbon.

Estádio do Restelo in Belem in the west of Lisbon is the home ground of Os Belenenses. Founded in 1919, Os Belenenses (Clube de Futebol Os Belenenses) is one of the oldest sports clubs in Portugal. The stadium was built in 1956 in a former quarry and previously had a much larger capacity before becoming an all-seater.

The club was formerly Lisbon's third team after the big two of Benfica and Sporting. It was the first Portuguese team to participate in the Europa League and way back won the 1945-46 Primeira Liga. This was the first time a Portuguese team other than Benfica, Sporting or Porto had done so. The club has also won 3 Portuguese Cups (Taça de Portugal) and 3 Campeonato de Portugal (the competition that preceeded the Taça de Portugal).

The stadium has a capacity of 19,856 people and was built in 1956.

Split

Unfortunately Os Belenenses, since 2018, has split acrimoniously into B-SAD (the professional club) and C.F. Os Belenenses (the historic and now amateur club which retains its titles and history).

B-SAD could no longer use Estádio do Restelo under the terms of the break up so C.F. Os Belenenses continues to use it while B-SAD rents the Estádio Nacional for its home fixtures.

The now amateur side continues to play their home games at the 19,000 capacity Estádio do Restelo.

The multi-purpose stadium is also used for concerts and Pope John Paul II once celebrated a mass here in front of 100,000 people in 1991. Several international games have also been played at the stadium.

The stadium is located in the Belem district close to the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, the Maritime MuseumBelem Tower, the Pastéis de Belem cafe, and the Monument to the Discoveries. Indeed, the famous pastry cafe lends its moniker to the nickname of the team who are known as Os Pastéis. Other team nicknames are Os Azuis do Restelo (the Blues of Restelo) and A Cruz de Cristo (The Order of Christ Cross) which features on the club's badge. This is a reference to the Order's Cross (the successors of the Knights Templars) that was featured on the sails of Portuguese vessels during the Age of Discoveries.
