Churches in Olhão
The pretty fishing and ferry port of Olhão on the Algarve, east of Faro, has several churches of interest.
Nossa Senhora do Rosário
The 17th century Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Church of Our Lady of the Rosary) is the largest church in Olhão and also the parish church (Igreja Matriz). Within the church the Baroque altarpiece in the chancel and the two side altarpieces, dating from the second half of the 18th century, stand out.
Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos
The nearby Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos is where the wives and families of sailors and fisherfolk would gather to pray for their safety. Look out for the votive offerings of baby dolls and plastic arms and legs within the iron grille. The two-storey church looks out over Avenida da República. Candles within are kept constantly lit.
Igreja Paroquial de Olhão
The smaller, simple Igreja Paroquial de Olhão (Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Soledade) also dates from the 17th century and has a single nave. Inside, the altarpieces and an image of Santa Luzia stand out. Notice the stork's nest on the roof.
