Elevador de Santa Luzia, Viana do Castelo
The Elevador de Santa Luzia in Viana do Castelo is a funicular dating back to 1923. Visitors can ride the elevador to Monte de Santa Luzia and its basilica, Santuário de Santa Luzia. It is the longest funicular in Portugal.
History
It was built thanks to the efforts of the Porto-based entrepreneur and engineer Bernardo Pinto Abrunhosa.
Totally renovated between 2005-2007 the funicular ascends 650 meters to the summit in 6-7 minutes. Walking is a 30-minute hike up hundreds of stairs.
Information & Hours
The carriage has a capacity of 24 people, 12 seated and 12 standing.
The elevator operates with the following schedule: January, February, November and December: Closed on Monday. Open from Tuesday to Friday, from 10 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 5 pm; Saturday and Sunday, from 10 am to 5 pm.
March, April, May and October: Open from Monday to Friday, from 10 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 5 pm; Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 6 pm. June, July, August and September: Open from Monday to Sunday from 9 am to 8 pm.
