The Museu de Electricidade in Funchal on Madeira is a museum dedicated to electricity production on the island.
History
Housed in a former thermal power station of the Madeira Electric Lighting Company Limited dating from 1897, the museum opened in 1989.
Exhibits
The "Lights of the Funchal" gallery exhibits various types of lighting used in Funchal over the ages from the first olive oil lamps to current lamps. The "Century of Electricity" explains the history of electrification on the island. On display are various pieces of machinery from the two main forms of electric energy production on Madeira - thermal and hydraulic. The third gallery entitled "Energy Sources" explains various sources of energy in particular renewable energy. There is also an area dedicated to science and technology, equipped with interactive equipment and multimedia software. The Electricity Museum also has a gallery for temporary exhibitions, an auditorium, documentation centre, as well as a shop and cafeteria. It is fully accessibe for wheelchair users.

Hours: Tuesday to Friday: 10 am to 12 pm; 2 pm to 6 pm; Saturday 9.30 am to 4 pm; closed on Monday, Sunday and public holidays. The Electricity Museum is a short walk from the Madeira Story Centre.
