Largo do Chiado, Lisbon

March, Largo do Chiado, Lisbon

The small square outside Baixa-Chiado station on the Lisbon metro is always full of street performers day and night, whatever the season. The Largo do Chiado is a fun hive of activity, whatever the hour. There are trendy bars, bookshops, cafes, galleries and restaurants all within walking distance of the station.

The square is right in the centre of the city. It is close to many popular Lisbon attractions such as nearby Cafe A Brasileira, Cervejaria Trindade, Convento do Carmo, and Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Encarnação.

Also in the square is a bronze statue of the 16th century satirical poet António Ribeiro Chiado (Évora, 1520-Lisbon, 1591), who lived in the area (hence the name "Chiado") on what is now Rua Garrett. He was a contemporary of Luís de Camões.
