The Chafariz da Praça do Giraldo in Praça do Giraldo in Evora stands in front of the 16th century renaissance-style church of Church of Santo Antão.

The lovely fountain is the work of the architect Afonso Álvares and was built in 1571 in white marble topped with a bronze crown. According to tradition, the eight gargoyles correspond to the eight streets that lead into the square.
Álvares was the Master of Works for the ill-fated Portuguese monarch, Sebastian. His other works which have survived the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755 include the renovations of the Fort of Santiago do Outão in Setúbal and parts of the Amoreira Aqueduct in nearby Elvas.
