Jardim Afonso Albuquerque, Lisbon
Afonso de Albuquerque is one of the great Portuguese heroes of the Age of Discoveries. A larger than life character, Albuquerque carved out a Portuguese empire in India and parts of South East Asia. he was a knight of the Order of St James among his many titles.

A statue and park in his honour is located in Belem just outside the Museu da Presidência da República (Museum of the President of the Republic).
Afonso de Albuquerque stands on a white, stone column surrounded by lawns and small ponds. The statue is by the sculptor, Costa Mota and stands on a neo-Manueline base, surrounded by fountains.

The park is close to Belem Station on the Cascais Line from Cais do Sodre or can be reached by tram #15.
A good hotel just to the north of the park is Jeronimos 8. Also nearby is the famous cafe Pasteis de Belem, well-known for its delicious custard tarts, and the Planetário de Marinha (formerly the Planetário Calouste Gulbenkian).
